CLASSES FOR CHILDREN combine physical fitness exercises with traditional karate techniques. Age-appropriate activities are taught and a variety of positive strategies for imparting discipline are employed. Children working with other children fosters an atmosphere of cooperation and shared learning experience. The goal of the program is to develop self-discipline, self-reliance and concentration while learning practical skills and self-respect for others.

The benefits of karate training for children are numerous:

  • Increased eye-hand coordination
  • Grace under pressure
  • Increased concentration
  • Flexibility and body conditioning
  • Increased self-determination
  • Positive social skills
  • Sense of belonging

At a time when crime against children and by children is on the rise, it is important to find alternative activities that will channel the child's energy into positive outlets. Although children may become interested in the "sport" from television and film exposure which glorifies fighting, training will encourage the need for mutual respect and instill a sense of hard work in order to achieve goals.

Classes are energetic with frequent changes in tempo. Organized play is structured to teach the basic skills of balance, quick reflexes and friendly competition. Most all, the classes are fun! From ages 4 up.

Hoa Sen Dojo also offers a variety of activities for children, including summer camps and kid-friendly tournaments. For more information, please check our Events page.

Becoming the Lotus

Emerging from the depths of a muddy swamp, the pure white lotus flower symbolizes enlightenment and rebirth. Playing a prominent role in creation stories in ancient Egypt and India, the flower is an apt choice for a school which emphasizes personal growth through learning martial movement.

From the darkest depth comes the purest of blooms, the only plant to fruit and flower simultaneously. The lotus is a metaphor for the self-actualization made possible through study and discipline. This is the mission at Hoa Sen Dojo.
